AstroSoul perform as an acoustic duo that make the perfect pair for chilled Sunday Sessions in Melbourne. The husky vocals of lead singer, Jessica Wilson, will immediately seduce you. Jessica’s guitar playing partner, Cristian Barbieri, provides gentle backing vocals to allow her to showcase her distinctive vocal talents. He is given his own chance to shine when he performs his sublime guitar solos in the song breaks. Together, AstroSoul create a cool, chilled vibe that is the perfect way to set the tone in a bar or restaurant, and will have the patrons transfixed by their performance and captivated by Jessica Wilson’s lush vocals.

There is a rich tone to Jessica’s voice that makes her so well-suited to singing soul and R&B songs. You can see that she really feels the music in her soul as she sings. AstroSoul are based in Brunswick, the hub of Melbourne’s live music scene and it is easy to see that music flows through their veins.

Jessica Wilson has such a cool aura and a funky twang to her vocals. She is effortlessly able to turn her hand to singing songs by the most accomplished soul singers of all time, including Al Green, Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin.

AstroSoul’s setlist includes Otis Redding’s ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay’ which really sets the scene whether you are at a riverside bar or a restaurant with views of Port Phillip Bay. Another song perfect for river or beachside bars, introduced by the lyrics, ‘Well sometimes I go out by myself, And I look across the water’, is Amy Winehouse’s ‘Valerie’. When singing ‘Valerie’, AstroSoul take the tempo down a notch from the original to add more depth to the song, as Jessica is able to linger longer on words to really stretch out the notes.

In addition to singing soul standards and contemporary R&B, AstroSoul also take songs from outside these two genres and transform them into an R&B or soul arrangement. This is showcased in the video below of Sam Sparro’s dance track ‘Black and Gold’ which is stripped back and slowed down to create a more melodic sound which places focus on Jessica’s rich vocals.
